Lumi Bros and the EU KIDS Act
What the KIDS Act is
The EU KIDS Act (Keeping Internet Digital spaces accountable and trustworthy) is a legislative proposal presented by the European Commission in September 2026. It sets common rules across the European Union to protect children online, and it now goes through the European Parliament and the Council before it becomes law. Read the proposal on the European Commission's website.
In short, the proposal asks online services used by children to:
- Drop addictive design. No streaks that punish a child for not coming back every day, no notifications sent to pull a child back to the app, no autoplay. Services must offer time limits and breaks.
- Keep AI chatbots and companions in check. They may not simulate human relationships in ways that can create emotional dependency, and by default they may not carry a child's earlier conversations into the next one. Under-13s may use them only through parental control tools.
- Keep embedded chatbots optional. A chatbot built into another service may not switch itself on or be pushed at the child, and must be easy to turn off.
- Start from safe settings. Protective settings are on by default, and personalisation based on tracking is off.
- Check age while respecting privacy, with verification methods that do not reveal more about the child than needed.
- Prove safety before and after launch. Risks must be assessed before a service reaches children and monitored afterwards. Parental tools add to the provider's duties; they do not replace them.
Breaches can lead to fines of up to 6% of a company's worldwide annual turnover.
Aligned with the EU KIDS Act
Lumi was designed for children from the first line of code. The obligations of the KIDS Act describe how we already build the product, so we meet them today, before they are mandatory.
How Lumi already meets it
A tutor, not a companion
Lumi is an educational voice tutor. It always presents itself as an AI, never as a person, and it does not claim human experiences of its own. Its job is to help a child understand their schoolwork, not to keep them company. It does not play at friendship and it never asks a child to come back.
Conversations stay inside schoolwork
When a child raises something outside schoolwork, or something that is not appropriate for a minor, the tutor steers back to the lesson instead of following. The open-conversation mode is switched off by default.
Safety comes first
If a child says something that suggests they may be at risk, the tutor follows the same safety protocol in every mode: it sets the lesson aside and points them to a trusted adult. A “Something is wrong” button is always on screen; it pauses the session and shows the child who to talk to. These events are recorded by category only, never with the child’s words.
No memory of the child’s personal life
Personal memory is off by default. From one session to the next the tutor keeps only short learning notes (topics covered, difficulties, progress), never what the child said. The child can see those notes and delete them at any time.
No notifications to bring children back
Lumi sends no push notifications, messages or reminders to children, and a child is never contacted for being inactive. A child uses Lumi when an adult or their school has decided they should.
Time limits by age, and no sessions at night
Every session has a maximum length and every day a maximum total, both set by age group. Sessions cannot start between 9 pm and 7 am. When the time is up, the tutor wraps up with a summary and the session ends.
An adult is always in charge
Access is created by an adult: a parent or legal guardian through a family account, or a school for its pupils. A child never signs up on their own. Parents and schools see session history, time spent and progress, every change to a child’s settings is recorded, and the child is told when their settings change. Teachers are not shown AI-generated scores.
No streaks, no rankings, no feeds
There are no streaks or rewards for coming back on consecutive days, no leaderboard comparing children with each other, no infinite scroll and no autoplay. A session has a beginning and an end.
No tracking, no advertising, no emotion analysis
We collect only what a lesson needs. We do not build advertising profiles of children, do not sell or share their data for marketing, and do not show them ads. Lumi does not analyse a child’s voice, face or words to infer their emotions, and the service refuses to start if such a feature is ever switched on. Transcripts are deleted automatically after a short period, and what a child says is not used to improve AI models without a guardian’s separate consent.
Tell us if something is wrong
If anything about a conversation worries you, write to [email protected] and we will review the session. Read our child protection policy for more on how we keep children safe.
We will keep this page up to date as the proposal goes through the European Parliament and the Council. Last updated: September 2026.
